Xpey’ (Cedar) Restoration and Protection

Quw’utsun’ Cultural Connections Society (QCCS) is leading the X’pey Restoration and Protection Project in the Cowichan Valley, working to protect xpey’ (cedar), a cultural keystone species facing growing pressures from climate change and land development. In 2025, QCCS hosted a PICS Climate Action Intern to support xpey’ (cedar) protection. In this video, intern Isaac Kuugaayeng reflects on his role in the project and what he learned while working alongside community members stewarding this culturally important species.

The project team also describes the origins and purpose of the xpey’ (cedar) protection project, highlighting how it brings together Elders and youth to revitalize cultural practices, strengthen stewardship of cedar, and reconnect the next generation with traditional knowledge about the land.
